Yeah, I'm not sure how i feel about it, I think luffy dying was stupid its was literally a stupid cliff hanger that lasted less than a chapter. I'm mostly upset about the gum gum fruit thing, I liked that luffy wasn't a fated hero, that he was just a chaotic pirate that disrupted the world order, now its just about how fate led shanks to leave the most valuable treasure in the world at the bar one day, I knew luffy would be joyboy but this is just rediculous

I don't think its all bad though Gear 5 looks great, the sun god fruit is stupid but the actual design and the goofy attitude is a nice change of tone

That's the same as naruto where they undid his story and all the hard work just to make him god like for the boss fight. I've never seen or read one piece, but I thought it was already at that point.

I totally agree, the best part about Luffy was him having technically the worst fruit powers but making it work thanks to his wit, creative way of using his powers and battle experience. Such a shitty deus ex machina really makes everything so far a lot shittier, also the navy saying his fruit is like the thing they've been wanting the most all along makes no sense at all

Man I feel so sorry for One Piece fans, I haven't kept up with it for years at this point but it's gotta sting even more for those who have.

I find it bittersweet. His "god" form is just him embracing the full array of characteristics, behaviors, and reactions of rubber hose cartoon characters that his stretch powers were already imitating. Becoming a god in this series is a matter of transitioning from the usual shonen anime BS to the whimsical golden age of cartoon hijinks. This could become amazing to see in motion, except the One Piece anime is an embarrassment to watch most of the time, so the visual potential of that stupid power-up will likely be completely wasted with excessive still frames and individual close-up reactions from each and every onlooker between each attack.

The god thing is stupid but the fact that the long-awaited Gear Fifth is just goofy Looney Tunes shenanigans is so funny that I can't even be mad.

What I do dislike is that this power-up is completely unearned. It didn't awaken because Luffy trained to awaken it or because he figured out some sort of new way to use his abilities, it awakened because he lost the fight but he's the protagonist and he's not allowed to lose, so now he's magically back in the game for round...what is it now? Five?

I'll admit, I do kind of agree that gear 5 feels a little bit like an anime trope, and also a little unearned. Like the man was about to die, and now suddenly he just awakens his fruit out of nowhere and gets a whole new gear. It kind of reminds me of when Naruto just kept getting more and more insane power-ups towards the end. Gear 5 feels a little too.. obvious i guess...idk.

but with that being said, I really appreciate that gear 5 is really goofy and fun instead of being the edgelord everyone thought gear 5 might have been LOL.

Well, I just hope Oda handles Gear 5 well in the future

(sorry about the extra replies, my computer sh*t itself for a second)

@Icy64 Agreed! Gear 5 is a little stupid imo, but at least it's not what people thought it was going to be

Does it undermines luffy’s previous accomplishments, it really depends how the viewer percibes it.
Im a fan of underdog and not child of prophecy stories, however just because it has become a type of story I’m not a particular fan of doesn’t mean its gonna be, pun intended “destined” to be bad.
Its like music, you might dislike a genre of music but there might be one or two songs of that genre that you surprisingly enjoy, I think oda has the skills to make a good ending for the story, even if it ends up being not the ending we would have hoped...

Umm yeah that sucks big time, but hey the powers are whacky so COOL! What? Your still not happy about it? Maybe One piece wasn't the story for you then...*Eye brow raise* *eyebrow wiggle*

It's manga writing. Especially hit long running Shonen flagship ONE PIECE! The fact that it's still going is staggering in itself. It's unfortunate that the stakes are gone, but that's the price you have to pay for a 1044 chapter manga. So many dead manga series line the street of time fallen to poor planning and overbaked ideas so for one piece to have made it this far with a goofy about face to 5th gear is still a staggering feat. (Just an albeit... interesting one? :[ )

It's time for you to inherit the mantle of responsibility of making a kickass pirate adventure! Make sure to keep the big titties in there though.

I would never dare make a pirate story without big titties.

I was expecting Luffy's awakened powers to be (besides turning other things into rubber) ereasing things (rubber and erasers being made of the same materials and even having the same name in some languages), since that would be dangerously OP and, as JJBA part 4 demonstrates, can be balanced out by the user being stupid or unwilling to kill. I was not expecting a paramecia turning out to be a mythical zoan that turns the user into a god (unless the SMILEs being zoans was meant to be some kind of hint? But still...)

Like others here, I have mixed feelings about that chapter. I was a bit disappointed with the reveal about the fruit's secret identity, but the new form being goofy and funny makes me want to see the full fight. I just hope gear 5 will have some serious drawbacks to balance it out (being hard to summon + requiring user to be pretty much dead + putting in a long coma after it's over + driving the user insane and incappable of telling friend and foe appart over time, for example).
